Russia-Ukraine War: List of the most important events, day 915 | News about the Russia-Ukraine War

These are the key developments as the war enters its 915th day.

Here is the situation on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.

Battle

  • At least six people were killed in Ukraine on the second day of Russian missile and drone attacks, including in the central Russian city of Kryvyi Rih and the southern Russian city of Zaporizhia. At least nine people were injured. On Monday, Russia launched its largest airstrike since the invasion began in 2022.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine would retaliate against Russia for its attacks. The Ukrainian Air Force said Ukraine shot down five of 10 missiles and 60 of 81 drones launched by Russia on Tuesday. Some of them were destroyed by F-16 fighter jets from the West. Ten more drones were lost sight of and presumably crashed somewhere on Ukrainian territory. Another entered neighboring Belarus.
  • Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrskii, said Ukraine had captured 594 Russian soldiers and taken control of 1,294 square kilometers (nearly 500 square miles) and 100 settlements since it began its incursion into Russia’s western Kursk region on August 6.
  • Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), visited the Kursk nuclear power plant. He said it was vulnerable to a major accident because it did not have a protective dome to protect it from missiles, drones and artillery during the fighting in the region.
  • Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of Russia’s western Belgorod region, said the situation on the border with Ukraine was “difficult but under control” after reports emerged on Russian Telegram channels that Ukraine had attacked a border checkpoint near Nekhoteyevka and then pushed back.
  • On television, Ukrainian President Syrskii said the situation around Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine was “quite difficult” as Russia was trying to cut off Ukraine’s supply lines to the front. “The enemy is using its advantage in personnel, weapons and military equipment and is actively using artillery and air power,” he said. The Russian Defense Ministry had previously said its forces had captured the village of Orlivka near Pokrovsk.

Politics and Diplomacy

  • Zelensky said he would present a “victory plan” to US President Joe Biden and his two possible successors, probably while he is in New York next month for the United Nations General Assembly. The plan is intended to ensure that Ukraine enters eventual talks to end the war in a strong position. “The main point of this plan is to force Russia to end the war. And I want that very much – [that it would be] fair for Ukraine,” he told reporters in Kyiv.
  • China’s special envoy for Eurasian affairs, Li Hui, called on other countries to support his peace plan for Ukraine after a round of diplomatic talks with Indonesia, Brazil and South Africa. “They have maintained contact with both Russia and Ukraine and remain committed to a political solution to the crisis through dialogue and negotiations,” Li said. China did not attend the peace summit organized by Switzerland in June. Earlier this year, it published a joint peace plan with Brazil.
  • Moscow said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin exchanged views on the war in Ukraine. Modi was in Kyiv last week.
  • Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov condemned Ukraine’s move to ban a Russian-affiliated branch of the Orthodox Church, calling it an attack on Christianity and a blow to religious freedom. Kyiv accused the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (UOC) of supporting Moscow’s 30-month war by spreading pro-Russian propaganda and harboring spies.
  • The Russian secret service FSB announced that it had initiated criminal proceedings against two more foreign journalists who had crossed the Russian border after the Ukrainian invasion to report from the Kursk region. The news agency Interfax reported that the journalists included a reporter from Deutsche Welle and a correspondent from the Ukrainian television channel 1+1. The FSB has now initiated criminal proceedings against at least seven foreign journalists who had reported from Kursk.

Weapons

  • Zelensky said the military recently conducted the first successful test of a domestically produced ballistic missile, but he said he could not provide further details.
