The Mets played a 2-2 draw with the San Diego Padres to open their West Coast tour over the weekend and finished Sunday’s game with a 3-2 loss capped by Jackson Merrill’s dramatic walk-off home run.

Jose Quintana held the Padres offense in check for just over six innings of pitching, getting off to an impressive scoreless start. Solo home runs by JD Martinez and Mark Vientos gave New York an early 2-0 lead. But the Mets relief pitchers couldn’t get him the win, allowing San Diego to tie the game and eventually win.

That left the Mets one and a half games behind the Atlanta Braves at the end of the weekend and still on the wild card bubble as they prepare to face the 75-56 Diamondbacks, who are second in the NL West behind the MLB-leading Dodgers.

Here is a recent AP baseball story:

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Rookie Jackson Merrill hit a one-out home run off Edwin Díaz in the ninth inning to help the San Diego Padres to a dramatic 3-2 win over the New York Mets on Sunday and tie a four-game series between the teams in the race for the playoffs.

Merrill hit a 2-0 slider from Díaz (5-2) deep into the right-field seats and then began an emphatic run. He slammed his bat down the field, pointed toward the Padres dugout and hit a five-out with Jurickson Profar hitting a tying two-run shot in the eighth inning. He pointed toward the Padres bullpen and clenched his right fist as he rounded second base and was then greeted with wild cheers after touching home base.

It was the 19th home run for Merrill, a 21-year-old who is currently battling Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes for the NL Rookie of the Year title.

“He’s that guy,” Profar said. “He’s got it. Every time he goes to bat like that … everyone in the dugout can feel it.”

Jake Cronenworth singled before Merrill hit a home run.

Merrill again diverted attention when asked how the walk-off home run felt.

“Same as every day we win: We won the game. That’s how it felt. Any thoughts about myself or anything else go to the team,” he said.

Cronenworth whispered something to Merrill before walking to the plate.

“I’m trying to be more focused, to swing at better throws, and having him tell me what’s happening with the throws has helped,” Merrill said.

Merrill was a coveted shortstop prospect when the Padres moved him to center field in spring training to fill the void created when Trent Grisham was sent to the New York Yankees along with Juan Soto in a blockbuster trade in December. Merrill made the Opening Day lineup and has shined with his bat and glove.

“I’ve said it many times since I was on the field with him in spring training, he showed me that he’s that kind of guy,” said Profar, who is having his career year at 31 with a $1 million contract.

Merrill said it was cool to hit Profar five times. “But we’re there for each other. It’s not just one person who did this.”

It was Merrill’s second walk-off home run. The Padres have 33 comeback wins and eight walk-offs.

Robert Suarez (8-1) threw a perfect ninth inning and took the win.

The Padres beat the Mets for only the second time in seven games this year.

“That was great. They beat us,” Profar said. “We got steamrolled in New York and they were about to win another series against us. We had to win that game.”

The Padres are in the NL’s second wild-card spot, while the Mets are in third place behind Atlanta. New York now travels to Arizona for a three-game series against the Diamondbacks, who have moved into first place with six straight wins.

San Diego eliminated the 101-win Mets in a wild-card matchup in 2022 en route to an appearance in the NL Championship Series.

The Mets took a 2-0 lead with home runs from JD Martinez and Mark Vientos.

After the Padres squandered a big scoring opportunity in the seventh inning, Profar hit a home run to the right side of José Buttó in the eighth inning when Mason McCoy was on a walk and one out. It was his 21st home run, a career high, and the fifth time this season he hit a tying home run.

Martinez hit a two-out home run to center in the fourth inning, his 15th.

Left-hander Martín Pérez then walked the last three batters in the Mets’ order to load the bases before Francisco Lindor, who hit a grand slam and a solo shot in Saturday night’s 7-1 victory. Manager Mike Shildt called in Bryan Hoeing, who threw out Lindor.

Vientos hit a one-out home run to center in the seventh inning, his 21st.

Mets second baseman Jose Iglesias made a sensational play in the sixth inning when he pounced on Profar’s hard hit and, lying on his stomach, reached back with his left foot to touch the bag and force Mason McCoy in. Lindor, the shortstop, came over, hit Iglesias a five-out and hugged him.

The Padres missed a big scoring opportunity after driving out left-hander Jose Quintana in the seventh inning. Manny Machado hit a leadoff single and Merrill walked with one out, and manager Carlos Mendoza called Buttó. Pinch-hitter David Peralta hit a ball just past third base and then another ball just past first base.

As Shildt yelled at the umpires, Merrill charged to second base, but slipped over the bag and was taken out of the game by a diving Lindor on a throw from Luis Torrens. Lindor showed the umpire the ball, then slammed his glove on the ground four times and clenched his right fist.

Quintana held San Diego to four hits in 6 1/3 scoreless innings.

Pérez allowed one run and four hits in 3 2/3 innings.
