Netflix has offered a first look at the next major production in its true crime program.

The upcoming miniseries, titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” is the second installment in Ryan Murphy’s “Monsters” anthology, which began in 2022 with the release of the popular and controversial “Monster: The Jeffery Dahmer Story.”

Like the previous season, this season is also about a true crime story. This time it’s about the Menendez brothers, who were convicted of murdering their wealthy parents in the late 1980s and who attracted America’s attention through the subsequent investigations and trials.

“In the second part of the anthology series ‘Monsters,’ Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan delve into another spectacular case that gripped the nation in the 1990s,” Netflix said in an Aug. 27 release. “‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’ tells the story of two brothers who killed their parents on August 20, 1989, and the events surrounding the brutal murders.”

Here’s what Netflix has revealed so far about the upcoming release.

What is Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story about?

“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” is a dramatized retelling of the crimes of the infamous Menendez brothers.

Like “The Jeffery Dahmer Story,” which starred Evan Peters, the second installment in the “Monsters” series features some big names, including Chloë Sevigny and Javier Bardem, who portray fictionalized versions of the real people involved in the case.

The series revolves around Lyle Menendez and Erik Menendez, played by Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch respectively. During the real criminal trials between 1994 and 1996, the two were often referred to as “the Menendez brothers” and became known for the murders of their parents José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez.

The murders and the trials that followed gripped the American conscience after police found the wealthy parents dead in their Beverly Hills home in August 1989. José was shot six times with a shotgun at close range, and Kitty was shot ten times. The brothers were present when police arrived, but told officers the murders had taken place while they were at a movie theater or festival.

The brothers later admitted to the murders, but claimed their actions were the result of years of sexual, emotional and physical abuse. Prosecutors argued that their motive was actually to inherit the family’s multimillion-dollar fortune, leading to convictions of first-degree murder and life sentences for both.
