Vandalism in Marion is not a hate crime, but is still being investigated

MARION, Iowa (KCRG) – Marion police are still investigating vandalism detected at Hunters Ridge Golf Course and a nearby residence earlier this month, but do not believe it was a hate crime.

In an update on Tuesday, police said someone had spray-painted a message and a swastika on the number 1 tee and the number 18 green.

The message was apparently addressed to a golf course employee.

Acts of vandalism at a nearby home reportedly included spray-painting a vulgar word on the garage door and a swastika on the ground.

Investigators said a neighbor’s camera captured the image of three juveniles who police believe were responsible for the vandalism of the house, but police did not disclose whether they were able to identify them.

Although the cost of the vandalism on the golf course and the house is over $2,500, based on all the evidence gathered so far, police do not believe it was a hate crime.

Police continue to ask anyone with information about the vandalism to call Crime Stoppers at 800-CS-CRIME.
