The Opening Ceremony will be held outdoors for the first time in Paralympic history, kicking off at 2pm ET / 11am PT / 7pm BST on Wednesday (that’s 4am AEST on Thursday) and director Thomas Jolly will pray for Parisian sunshine.

An estimated 4,400 athletes – including 224 from Team USA – will compete for 549 medals in 22 sports. The venue next to the Eiffel Tower, which hosted beach volleyball during the Olympics, will host blind football, while the para-equestrian competitions will take place at the Château de Versailles.

Most of the sports – para-basketball, sitting volleyball, shooting, wheelchair tennis, para-athletics, etc. – will be familiar to spectators. However, there are two sports at the Paralympics that not have an Olympic counterpart: Goalball and Boccia.

Look out for American Paralympic swimmer Jessica Long, who hopes to add to her current tally of 29 Paralympic medals. And of course, don’t miss wheelchair rugby – the sport that inspired the 2005 film Murderball.

Where to watch the 2024 Paralympics for FREE

Australian viewers looking to enjoy every moment of the Paris 2024 Paralympics are in luck, as the entire sporting festival will be broadcast FREE on Channel 9 and 9Gem. You can also watch it for free on streaming service 9Now.

The USA will host the Paralympics and Olympic Games in 2028. Los Angeles, California has been confirmed as the host city. However, to enjoy this year’s Paralympics in Paris, France, American viewers will have to rely on NBCUniversal, which will broadcast the opening ceremony on USA. These broadcasts may be included in your cable package.

However, the best option is NBC’s streaming service peacock as it will be live streaming every competition at the Paris Paralympics and promises to provide a daily recap highlighting all the key medal-winning moments.
