SANFORD, N.C. (WTVD) – A shooting on a highway in Sanford spread to a gas station in Harnett County.

The Harnett County Sheriff’s Office said it all started Monday evening on Highway 421 at the intersection with Highway 87 in Sanford.

DeCarlos Donte Cherry, 32, was driving his 2013 Toyota Camry when someone in a black Dodge Charger started shooting at him.

Cherry continued south on US-421 with the Dodge Charger in pursuit. Cherry soon crossed the border into Harnett County and stopped at the Circle K convenience store just off McArthur Road in search of help.

He jumped out of his car and raced into Circle K.

More bullets flew from the Dodge Charger toward Cherry in the Circle K. Several customers were in the Circle K when the shooting occurred; none of them were injured.

Emergency personnel arrived shortly afterward and took Cherry to a nearby hospital for treatment. He had been shot at least once; the severity of his injuries was not disclosed.

The Harnett County Sheriff’s Office said it has not yet been determined who was in the Dodge Charger that fired shots in Cherry or who the people in the Circle K were.
