Police: Drug investigation leads to discovery of dogs in pitiful condition

MERCER COUNTY, Kentucky (WKYT) – During a drug investigation, police discovered dozens of dogs living in deplorable conditions.

Harrodsburg police said their investigation led them to a home on Oregon Road north of Harrodsburg in the Salvisa community of Mercer County. A search warrant was served and a man and woman were arrested.

Police arrested 47-year-old Kenneth Brawner and 52-year-old Gabriella Follmer. Both are accused of drug offenses, animal cruelty and mistreatment of a dog or cat.

Police say 34 dogs were removed from the home. Mercer County Animal Shelter officials say more than 20 dogs were returned to the shelter and some of them were in poor condition.

“Some have neurological problems and the older dogs may have skin problems that need to be treated. Most were fed and doing well. What was scary was the condition of the facility itself,” said Wendy Quiggle of the Mercer County Animal Shelter.

Police said they found drugs and drug paraphernalia in the home, including meth, pipes, baggies, cash and a crystal-like substance. They also found something that looked like fentanyl.

Officials say the dogs will be adopted once the legal process is complete. They describe most of the dogs as “hound and pit bull” breeds.
