Dog rescued in apartment fire in Charleston, three probably homeless

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – A Lowcountry puppy is safe after Charleston and Mount Pleasant firefighters responded to an apartment fire in the Cainhoy area.

According to officials, the two fire departments were called to the 300 block of Newbrook Drive shortly before 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning because of an automatic fire alarm.

When emergency responders arrived at the three-story apartment, they found that the automatic fire alarm was still activated and residents reported smelling smoke.

Crews searched the building and located a possible fire in a third-floor apartment. Firefighters broke down the door and found smoke in the apartment, as well as a kitchen fire that had been extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system.

The firefighters quickly searched the apartment and found a dog, which they brought safely out of the apartment.

Crews then assessed the damage left by the fire and ensured that the fire had been extinguished and residents evacuated.

Fire marshal investigators determined that the fire started on the stovetop after “flammable items” were left on the surface and ignited. The sprinkler system was able to contain the fire to the kitchen area.
