Chael Sonnen points out why fans shouldn’t write off Stipe Miocic in fight with Jon Jones

Chael Sonnen points out why fans shouldn’t write off Stipe Miocic in fight with Jon Jones

As the world desperately waits for Jon Jones to fight Tom Aspinall, Chael Sonnen claims the combat sports community has unfairly dismissed Stipe Miocic.

Given the Cleveland native’s many accomplishments, “The American Gangster” explains why this legend deserves respect.

Chael Sonnen believes fans underestimate Stipe Miocic

Although the fight has not yet been officially announced, rumors are circulating in the heavyweight division that Jon Jones will defend his UFC heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic.

This fight pits arguably the most talented mixed martial artist of all time against the greatest heavyweight of all time, but the fans are still not happy.

This is mainly due to the emergence of Tom Aspinall, who crushed every man who stood in his way on the way to the interim title.

Therefore, most believe that he is more deserving of a chance at the undisputed crown than the 42-year-old Miocic, who has not won in several years.

But while many are just hoping to get through this fight, hoping that “Bones” stays to face Aspinall rather than retiring, Chael Sonnen is deeply involved in the fight and claims it would be unwise to write off the UFC legend.

In a video uploaded to his YouTube channel, he said: “I hear that Stipe is not at his best. I hear that Stipe is finished. Those are very harsh words, but I wonder how we got there.”

“Jon Jones took his time, put on some weight, faced Ciryl Gane and looked better than he has in years. So Stipe took his time, put on some weight, but we’re not going to give him the benefit of the doubt and see if he looks better than he has in years?

“Stipe, after all this time and dedication, is not going to go out there and put on that size for a fight he believes he can’t win.”

Sonnen then explained that the significance of this fight goes far beyond what Miocic has already accomplished in his career and that this fight must therefore be won at all costs.

The Oregon slugger added: “The history books will be rewritten if Jon wins. It’s the same era. Every day Stipe was heavyweight champion of the world, Jon existed. So if Jon can beat Stipe, then every single day of that heavyweight reign is nonsense.”

And even though Sonnen is convinced that Miocic is a clear underdog, that hasn’t stopped the world from fantasizing about the Jones vs. Aspinall fight.

Given his recent performances, many would expect the Brit to complete his task with an explosive performance.

However, the American is not held in such high esteem without reason, so it is no surprise that many still believe in his victory.

A UFC legend has revealed the game plan he believes the polarizing star would need to follow to retain his title.
