UPDATE:

The GBI is investigating a shooting that occurred at a home in Carrollton, Carroll County, Georgia. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to open an investigation on August 20, 2024. One man is dead and a deputy was seriously injured in the incident.

Preliminary information indicates that on August 20, 2024, at approximately 8:30 a.m., GBI agents and Carroll County officers were at a home in the 300 block of Don Rich Drive, Carrollton, Georgia, executing a search warrant related to an ongoing GBI investigation. Carroll County officers knocked on the door of the home, which was answered by Christopher Bly, age 40, of Carrollton, GA. Bly immediately retreated into the home, followed by the officers. Bly drew a handgun and fired, striking himself and one of the officers. Bly was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deputy was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Atlanta. His condition remains critical.

Evidence secured during the investigation suggests that Bly died from a gunshot wound.

The shooting incident is being investigated by the GBI’s Atlanta Regional Office. The original search warrant was executed by agents from the GBI’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit. During the search, agents located and seized several electronic devices in the home that contained child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

Once the investigation is complete, the file will be turned over to the Carroll County District Attorney’s Office for review.
