Apartment catches fire during arson investigation

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama (WAFF) – Huntsville Fire Department responded to an apartment fire Tuesday, less than two days after a fire broke out in the same apartment that left 20 people homeless.

Shortly after 6 a.m. Tuesday morning, several firefighters were called to the Biltmore Apartments on Old Blue Spring Road, the same apartment building that was nearly destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon.

Huntsville police announced Monday that investigators have opened an arson investigation. On Tuesday morning, police confirmed they had arrested Jonathan Hughes and charged him with arson. Police linked him to the fire on Sunday, but did not do so Tuesday morning.

48 News crews dispatched to the scene saw smoke and flames. Firefighters did not say how the fire started.
