Although most of his records were broken on the field, Babe Ruth is still a heavyweight on the collector market.

The jersey Ruth wore in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series when he made the legendary “Called His Shot” and hit a home run against Chicago Cubs pitcher Charlie Root was auctioned Saturday night for $24.12 million – setting the record for the most expensive sports collectible.

Bidding on Ruth’s size 16 gray New York Yankees No. 3 away jersey was handled by Heritage Auctions. The buyer was not disclosed.

The previous record was a rare 1952 Mickey Mantle rookie card in mint condition that sold for $12.6 million in 2022.

Regardless of whether Ruth actually pointed to the center field bleachers and hit the ball there on Root’s next pitch, the jersey is significant because it was the last home run Babe hit in his illustrious World Series career.

In addition, photo matching revealed that it was the same jersey he wore in the 1932 World Series game at Wrigley Field.

The last Ruth jersey sold at auction in 2005 fetched $940,000, but its connection to the 1932 series was unclear.
