Bushfire in Anahola extinguished, under investigation

ANAHOLA – County and state fire crews successfully extinguished the brush fire on the east side of Kauai on Friday, August 23.

Firefighters battled a brush fire that broke out Thursday and continued to burn Friday on the mauka side of Kuhio Highway in Anahola.

On Thursday, August 22, the Kauai Fire Department (KFD) responded to a 911 call regarding a brush fire in Anahola.

First responders from Kaiakea and Kapaa fire stations, as well as Rescue 3, Tender 1, Air 1 and 2, the battalion chief on duty, building department staff and private landowners responded to the bushfire.

By 8 p.m. on Thursday, the fire had only been contained to 20 percent and had reached an estimated area of ​​4.0 to 6.8 hectares.

At around 9:50 a.m. Friday, the county reported the fire was still burning. N5 sensors were installed in the area overnight to monitor for further ignitions.

Emergency responders remained on standby and, with the assistance of residents and community firefighters, entered the fire through a gate on Hokualele Road. KFD continued to take control of the fire until it was successfully extinguished shortly before 2:55 a.m.

Firefighters returned to the scene the next morning to monitor embers and cleared the area around 11 a.m. Friday.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The fire destroyed a storage container and caused an estimated $8,000 in damage.
