Athletics U20 World Championships in Lima: Full schedule and viewing details

The World Athletics U20 Championships, to be held in Lima, Peru, from August 27 to 31, will showcase the talents of the world’s most promising young athletes. The event will feature some athletes who have already made a name for themselves at senior level, including participants in the recent 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Peru is hosting a World Athletics Series event for the first time. The competitions will take place at the Estadio Atlético de la Villa Deportiva Nacional in Lima. The stadium, which can accommodate up to 6,800 spectators, is no newcomer to large-scale events. It has already hosted the athletics competitions during the 2019 Pan American Games. During that event, the stadium’s capacity was increased to 12,000 with temporary seating.

Athletes to keep an eye on

This year’s championships will feature 1,720 athletes from 134 countries competing in 45 different disciplines. Among them are several Paris 2024 Olympians, such as Thailand’s Puripol Boonson, who excelled in the men’s 100m and 200m sprints. Australian sprinter Torrie Lewis, known for her surprise victory over Sha’Carri Richardson in the Xiamen Diamond League 200m, is another notable participant.

South African sprinter Bradley Nkoana, who won an Olympic silver medal in the 4x100m relay, will also make his U20 World Championships debut. Fellow countryman Bayanda Walaza is also expected to compete. Returning champions from the 2022 event in Cali include Karmen Bruus of Estonia (women’s high jump), Sharifa Davronova of Uzbekistan (women’s triple jump), Medina Eisa of Ethiopia (women’s 5000m) and Kerrica Hill of Jamaica (women’s 100m hurdles).
