Harris County District Attorney Arrested After Delivering Synthetic Marijuana to a Prison Defendant

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KWTX) – A Harris County attorney was arrested Aug. 26 after an investigation revealed he was smuggling drugs into the Harris County Criminal Justice Center for an incarcerated defendant.

Jason Johnson, 42, was charged with possession of a controlled substance in a correctional facility and engaging in organized crime.

During the investigation, conducted by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations and Security Division, Johnson was accused of providing sheets laced with synthetic marijuana to a client during a visit for a court hearing on or about August 5, 2024.

The Criminal Investigations and Detention Center Security Division was created in 2023 by Sheriff Ed Gonzalez as part of a vigorous effort to stop the flow of deadly contraband into the prison.

Other security measures implemented last year with the support of the Harris County Commissioners Court included the use of drug-sniffing dogs in the jail and increased security screening for jail staff and visitors.

The investigation is ongoing and further charges may have been filed.
