Sumit Nagal is eliminated in the first round after losing to Tallon Griekspoor

Sumit Nagal fell from the US Open 2024 in Tennis Men’s singles in the first round after losing to Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands in New York on Tuesday.

Nagal, ranked 73rd in the tennis singles rankings, offered a spirited fight in the third set but ultimately lost the match to world number one Griekspoor 6-1, 6-3, 7(8)-6(6) after two hours and 20 minutes at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Sumit Nagal was the only Indian tennis player at the 2024 US Open to compete in the singles category in the men’s and women’s events.

Griekspoor broke early in the first set and took a 2-0 lead, but Nagal responded immediately to make it 2-1. Nagal failed to hold his next two service games, costing him the first set.

Nagal started the second set better and kept the score at 2-2, but Griekspoor took control of the match with breaks in the fifth and ninth games.

In the third set, Nagal made a courageous comeback, scoring a decisive break in the 11th game. However, Griekspoor reacted immediately and forced a tiebreak, which ultimately won the match.

During the match, Griekspoor won 87 percent of points on his first serve, while Nagal had a success rate of 61 percent. Griekspoor triumphed over Nagal by winning six break points, while Nagal converted two.

However, with his appearance in the US Open singles, Sumit Nagal became the first Indian since 2019 to win all four Grand Slam titles tournaments in one year.

Nagal reached the second round of the Australian Open this year before being eliminated in the first round of the French Open and Wimbledon.

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, he became only the second Indian player since Leander Paes to make the singles cut in two consecutive editions of the Summer Games.

However, Nagal’s campaign at the US Open is not over yet. He will compete in the men’s doubles with his Japanese partner Yoshihito Nishioka.

Rohan Bopanna, a two-time Grand Slam champion, and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden are second seeds in the men’s doubles and are scheduled to play on Wednesday.

India’s Yuki Bhambri, his French partner Albano, India’s N Sriram Balaji and his partner Guido Andreozzi from Argentina are also taking part.
