Which communities are in the spray zone?

The Bay State plans to begin mosquito control efforts in more than a dozen communities on Tuesday as the region experiences an outbreak of the rare but dangerous EEE virus.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and the Department of Public Health, aerial and truck-based ground spraying to control mosquitoes will begin Tuesday evening.

The state previously announced the first human case of Eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus infection this year, a man in his 80s who was exposed to electrical and electronic equipment in Worcester County. The last EEE outbreak in Massachusetts a few years ago resulted in 17 human cases and seven deaths.

The ability to spray will depend on the weather, but the plan is to begin aerial spraying in parts of Plymouth County Tuesday evening and truck spraying in southern Worcester County.

Aerial spraying will take place in Carver, Halifax, Kingston, Middleboro, Plymouth, Plympton, Rochester and Wareham.

Soil spraying by truck takes place in Douglas, Dudley, Oxford, Sutton and Uxbridge.

For both aerial and truck applications, spraying begins at dusk and continues until about 4:30 a.m. the next day.

“Aerial spraying is scheduled to begin Tuesday evening, with the possibility of additional spraying on another evening,” officials said in a statement. “Truck spraying will begin Tuesday evening and continue on subsequent days. Due to upcoming changeable weather conditions, the schedule is subject to change.”

“If you see planes or trucks in your area before dark, they are either getting into position or they are scouting the area before they start spraying,” officials added.
