Nintendo Direct and Indie World Showcase in August: How to watch

A few months ago, I wrote about Nintendo’s plans to send the Switch off with a bang. We know the Switch 2 is coming within the next seven months, but the Japanese company still has big plans for its current console. We thought July’s Nintendo Direct would be one of the last before the Switch 2’s official reveal, but Nintendo isn’t ready to close the Switch chapter just yet, as the back-to-back showcases this week show.

On Tuesday, August 27th at 7am PT / 10am ET, Nintendo will host an Indie World Showcase followed by a Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase. The events will stream back-to-back and last approximately 40 minutes. You can watch both below:

We’re not sure what to expect exactly, as Nintendo is predictably tight-lipped about which studios will be participating in the dueling showcases. A look at the video game release calendar shows that some upcoming third-party Switch games are included Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, Harry Potter: Quidditch Master, Sonic X Shadow GenerationsAnd Dragon Quest III HD 2D Remake. Some or all of these points could be true on Tuesday.

Nintendo announced that “neither of the two presentations will mention the successor to the Nintendo Switch.” This is no surprise, but the company does not want to create unrealistic expectations and disappoint fans.

However, the timing of the presentations could give us a clue about Nintendo’s plans to unveil the Switch 2, which could be imminent:

As mentioned in the post above, the company also hosted a Nintendo Museum Direct on August 19 to show off its new museum opening in Kyoto, Japan this fall. That’s three showings in less than two weeks. It really seems like Nintendo is going to drop every Switch announcement it has left before it starts promoting the Switch 2 in the coming weeks.
