New smartwatch with 24-hour blood pressure measurement on the wrist

The company Huawei is best known in this country for its smartphones. However, Huawei has now presented a new product from a different category: the Huawei Watch D2, a smartwatch that has a medically certified function for 24-hour blood pressure measurement and, according to Huawei, is intended to usher in “a new era in mobile blood pressure management”. In addition, the smartwatch is compatible with both iOS and Android and can therefore be used universally.

As is now known, everyday stress, a hectic lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits also have an impact on blood pressure. The Huawei Watch D2 enables continuous monitoring even without manual measurement to identify potential hypertension risks. Leading international guidelines on hypertension treatment – including the ISH 2020 Global Hypertension Practice Guidelines – recommend ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) as the preferred method for diagnosing hypertension.

World’s first smartwatch with ABPM approval

To this end, Huawei has established close partnerships with hypertension experts from around the world. The Huawei Watch D2 is the world’s first smartwatch to be approved as an ambulatory blood pressure monitoring device (ABPM) by both the NMPA in China and in accordance with the requirements of the MDR in Europe. In addition to its 24-hour blood pressure measurement, the smartwatch offers ECG analysis and measures blood oxygen (SpO2), heart rate, stress level and skin temperature. “It thus ensures comprehensive health management directly on the wrist and helps to identify potential health risks at an early stage,” says Huawei.

At the touch of a button, nine key body indicators can be recorded and summarized in a detailed health report. These include heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen, ECG, arterial stiffness and sleep breathing measurement. For the first time, the Huawei Watch D2 integrated a blood pressure analysis into this report. The smartwatch also supports over 80 training modes and offers daily tracking of exercise, nutrition, sleep, weight and stress.

Lightweight comfort with elegant design

The Huawei Watch D2 also has a compact design and is lightweight, making it almost unnoticed in everyday life. The built-in 1.82-inch display with a resolution of 480 x 408 pixels at 347 ppi offers a “vivid, colorful user interface and an elegant 2.5D floating design” according to Huawei. In addition to the two color variants black and gold, Huawei offers the choice between a robust, sweat-resistant fluoroelastomer strap and a cream-colored leather strap in two sizes.

The Huawei Watch D2 is 48 x 38 x 13.3 mm in size, weighs around 40 grams without a strap, and uses an aluminum alloy for the case. The smartwatch is waterproof to IP68, but cannot be used for swimming or diving. Charging is wireless, and there is also a speaker, a microphone, NFC, and Bluetooth 5.2 with BR and BLE support. According to Huawei, with typical use, the Watch D2 can be used for around six days at a time; with the ABPM function for 24-hour blood pressure measurement activated, the battery should last up to one day.

Price and availability

The new watch can be ordered now and will be available from September 25, 2024 in the Huawei Flagship Store Berlin on Kurfürstendamm as well as in the webshop for a price of 399 euros (RRP). For more information, Huawei provides the product page for the Watch D2.
