Music fans spark heated debate about “best one-hit wonder of all time”

Music fans spark heated debate about “best one-hit wonder of all time”

Music lovers who prefer one-hit wonders to frequently played radio hits can rejoice: National One-Hit Wonder Day is here.

Several X users have listed their favorites in honor of the day, most of which were released between the 1980s and 2010s.

Chart hits like “Somebody I Used to Know” by Gotye and “Barbie Girl” by Aqua are just two of the many songs that were among the biggest one-hit wonders.

Some songs that were not mentioned, however, were “Macarena” by Los Del Rio and “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice.

Several X-users who are fans of 80s music insisted that A-ha’s “Take On Me” is the best one-hit wonder ever.

The 1985 hit won six of eight MTV Video Music Awards in 1986 and the video was nominated for an American Music Award.

“One of my favorites is ‘Take On Me’ by a-ha. Although they were more successful in Europe, this 1985 hit became a cult hit because of its catchy melody and innovative music video,” tweeted one X user.

Another song from the 80s that is popular among X-users is the 1982 hit “Come On Eileen” by Dexys Midnight Runners.

Not only did the song top the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but it was also Britain’s best-selling single of 1982.

Other ’80s classics mentioned by several X-users included “867-5309/Jenny” by Tommy Tutone, “Mickey” by Toni Basil, and “Don’t You Forget About Me” by Simple Minds.

The 1990s were full of one-hit wonders that have resurfaced in the media over the years.

One song that X-users mentioned more than once was “Return of the Mack” – Mark Morrison’s 1996 hit that reached the top three on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Today we’re playing ‘Return of the Mack,'” wrote one X user in response to a post made by Pop Base.

Another song from the ’90s that X-users have mentioned several times is “You Get What You Give,” New Radicals’ most popular hit from their only studio album in 1998.

The group performed the song for the first time in over 20 years to celebrate the inauguration of President Joe Biden, which he said was his family’s “uplifting theme song.”

“New Radicals’ ‘You Get What You Give’ has finally replaced ‘Walking on Sunshine’ as my favorite one-hit wonder,” tweeted one X-user.

Other one-hit wonders of the ’90s that received widespread attention on social media include “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba, “Macarena” by Los Del Rio and “Barbie Girl” by Aqua.

The 2000s and 2010s are full of songs by Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift, but music lovers could still memorize the lyrics of one-hit wonders Psy and Carly Rae Jepsen.

Psy’s “Gangnam Style” was an instant viral K-pop hit that took the U.S. by storm in 2012 and was at one point the most-viewed video on YouTube.

He has also performed at numerous other events and, with the help of MC Hammer, got the celebrities dancing at the American Music Awards with his “Gangnam Style” performance.

“Saying PSY is a one hit wonder… you’ll never understand the impact that has gentlemen,” tweeted one X user.

Although he only had a one-hit in the US, he is still popular in Korea and is considered one of the musicians who helped make K-pop more popular in America.

Carly Rae Jepsen rose to fame through her participation in Canadian Idol and released her number one hit “Call Me Maybe” in 2011 after receiving praise from Justin Bieber.

Not only was it the best-selling digital single of 2012 worldwide, but it also topped the Billboard Hot 100 for nine weeks.

“Call Me Maybe was too big for her to stand a chance,” wrote one X user.

Although there are hundreds of one-hit wonders to choose from, most X-users seem to have chosen “Somebody That I Used to Know” as their first favorite.

“If you don’t say ‘Gotye’ for ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ you’re not making a good choice,” tweeted one fan.

The song won Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 2013 Grammy Awards, and after his fame faded, Gotye retreated from the spotlight.

“I always wondered what happened to Gotye. Bugger just vanished off the face of the earth after ‘Now You’re Just Somebody That I Used To Know,'” wrote one X-user.
