US Open LIVE: Top 10 star quits in emotional scenes as Jannik Sinner interview mocked | Tennis | Sport

Jack Draper insists it is “strange” not to have Andy Murray at the US Open.

The 22-year-old is Britain’s hope for a Grand Slam success after Murray’s retirement from the Olympic Games.

“It feels a little weird not having Andy in the dressing room with his rancid, smelly shoes next to me,” joked Draper. “Andy’s shoes with his wedding ring on them would always be drying next to me.”

“I was next to him in the dressing room and there were his shoes, his wet grips – ‘Give me space so I can sit down!’ But I miss his presence a lot. I feel a responsibility to play really good tennis and be the British No. 1.”

“We miss Andy, but things like this have to come to an end. Hopefully I can carry on, and the other players too.”

And this despite Emma Raducanu clumsily suggesting that Murray was “nothing new”.

She said: “It doesn’t feel any different at all. Tennis is unforgiving in that way. No matter who you are, it just keeps going. There’s always another match, there’s always another tournament.”

“Of course Andy has achieved incredible things and I saw him win this tournament (in 2012), but the pace is fast, just like life. Somehow the news is old again overnight.”
