Pablo Cuevas says “Adios”

Pablo Cuevas has announced his retirement at the age of 38. As the man from Uruguay announced on Instagram on Tuesday, he is finally hanging up his tennis racket after more than 20 years on the tour.

“Tennis was more than a sport. It was my passion, my daily motivation and the reason why I woke up every morning – always with the desire to get better,” wrote Cuevas, who wants to stay involved in tennis in the future.

The South American’s announcement is not particularly surprising, as he has only played two matches in the current calendar year. Cuevas had no chance in the first round of qualifying at both the Australian Open and the US Open.

Cuevas won six titles during his career and reached a career high of 19th place in the world rankings. His greatest success came in 2016 at the ATP 500 tournament in Rio de Janeiro, where he defeated the Spanish clay court king Rafael Nadal, among others, on his way to winning the tournament.
