FC Bayern is taking a new approach to scouting and hopes to find a new Thomas Müller. Meanwhile, the Munich team is afraid of Taylor Swift.

Munich – Thomas Müller is an icon of FC Bayern Munich. A player who stands out for his versatility and understanding of the game – and there is probably no other player like him in the world. Or is there?

FC Bayern plans to use AI to discover unique talents like Müller. But how does that work exactly?

FC Bayern Munich relies on AI in the future

The record champions aim to use artificial intelligence to find similar talents who have the potential to follow in the footsteps of the record player. This innovative approach could revolutionize the scouting process and give the club a decisive advantage.

Michael Fichtner, CIO (Chief Information Officer) of FC Bayern, explained the diverse possible uses of AI in football at the “Auto, Motor und Sport” congress. The club sees great potential, especially in the area of scouting.

Scouting AI at FC Bayern? Record champions are looking for the “next Thomas Müller”

This is where AI can help identify patterns and evaluate young players to find out whether they have what it takes to become “the next Thomas Müller.” AI could also be used in injury analysis to better understand and reduce injury frequency, an issue that was a major concern for the club last season.

FC Bayern sees itself less as a competitor with other Bundesliga clubs, but rather as a challenge to maintain its relevance with fans. “We are not afraid that a current Bayern fan will become a fan of Bayer Leverkusen,” says the Munich club’s IT director.

Fichtner stressed that there is concern that fans may become increasingly interested in other forms of entertainment such as American football or artists such as Taylor Swift. To counteract this, the club is relying on innovative technologies such as AI to remain attractive and relevant.

FC Bayern appoints new head of scouting department

A further step in the strategic realignment of the scouting process could be the impending engagement of Nils Schmadtke as the new chief scout.

As Markus Pilawa’s successor, Schmadtke could possibly play a central role in integrating AI technologies into FC Bayern’s scouting strategy. However, according to Fichtner, the club is still at the beginning in this regard.

So the new Thomas Müller will have to wait a little longer. No problem, because the “old Thomas Müller” is still good enough at FC Bayern. (smk)
