Tennis star Alexander Zverev has repeatedly struggled with physical problems this season. The German has now been diagnosed with a serious illness.

Beijing – This year, too, tennis ace Alexander Zverev was not going to win the big Grand Slam title. Germany’s best tennis player was unable to break his Grand Slam curse at the four majors and will have to make a new attempt next year.

One reason for this: Zverev has not always been in the best physical shape this season. He has had to fight illnesses several times. After winning the Laver Cup in Berlin, the 27-year-old now has to take another forced break – because of pneumonia!

“Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with pneumonia, which explains the recent physical difficulties I’ve had over the last few months,” Zverev told the German Press Agency. “I have to take care of my health first so that I can compete again as soon as possible.”

Due to the illness, Zverev also had to cancel his planned start at the 500 event in Beijing. In the Chinese capital, the 27-year-old would have been seeded second behind the Italian Jannik Sinner. “I am very disappointed that I had to withdraw from the China Open.” “I will miss my Chinese fans in Beijing and hope to be able to play in front of them again soon,” Zverev continued.

Not the first illness for Zverev this season

The physical problems of the world number two are continuing this season. At the US Open, for example, where he lost in the quarter-finals to eventual finalist Taylor Fritz, Zverev complained of a cough. After the quarter-final exit at the Olympics, he suffered from circulatory problems. “I have to see what’s wrong with me now,” Zverev said alarmingly at the time. At the Laver Cup, he then struggled with a fever – possibly part of the pneumonia.

One reason for the many problems could be the busy schedule of the tennis stars, which many players are currently complaining about. Shooting star Carlos Alcaraz recently said that the tight tournament schedule was “killing” the players and that many players like him were of the opinion “that we have to do something about it.” Zverev also described the season from the end of December to the end of November as “unnecessarily long.”

What will happen next for Zverev is currently unclear. After his recovery, the Hamburg native hopes to be able to play in the Masters 1000 tournament from October 2 to 13 in Shanghai. After that, he will play in Vienna and Paris before moving on to the ATP finals of the best eight players in Turin. It is still unclear whether Zverev will play for Germany in the Davis Cup finals in Malaga. (LuHa/dpa)
