Class action lawsuit filed over alleged sexual abuse by Oakland County doctor – everything we know

Class action lawsuit filed over alleged sexual abuse by Oakland County doctor – everything we know

Several class action lawsuits have been filed against Dr. Oumair Aejaz. He is accused of sexually abusing and filming numerous patients without their consent over several years.

Victims were filmed on video in several hospitals and even a swimming school.

background

The investigation into Aejaz began when his wife informed authorities in August. A search warrant was executed and six computers, four cell phones and 15 hard drives were seized. One hard drive reportedly contained over 13,000 videos recorded by Aejaz over the past six years.

He was charged with one count of child sexual abuse, one count of using a computer to create or reproduce child sexual abuse material, two counts of recording/taking nude children under the age of 18, two counts of recording/taking nude two women over the age of 18, and four counts of using a computer to commit a crime.

His bail was set at $2 million.

Who is Dr. Oumair Aejaz?

Dr. Oumair Aejaz, 40, of Rochester Hills, is an Indian citizen who came to the United States in 2011 for an internship in Michigan. Since then, he has been working in the United States on a visa.

He is an internist, which means he specializes in internal medicine.

Aejaz completed his residency at Sinai Grace Hospital in Detroit and then moved to Dothan, Alabama around 2018.

“So this could extend not only to Michigan, but to other states and possibly even other countries,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said during a press conference on August 20, 2024.

Aejaz eventually returned to Oakland County to continue his practice. Police confirmed that he had worked at Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc and Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township, although he was not directly employed by either.

Officials are trying to figure out where else it might have worked, both in Michigan and elsewhere.

“He appears to have been a contract physician who went to various locations for a company rather than having his own practice, so we still don’t know how many facilities or locations he may have visited in this context,” Bouchard said.

Aejaz is currently married and has two young sons.

His Michigan medical license was issued on September 13, 2018, and was valid until September 13, 2025.

His medical license in Alabama expired in 2019.

suit

The lawyers who filed the lawsuit said dozens of women have already contacted them and they just want them to get the justice they deserve.

“We encourage our clients and all patients – and it’s not just women, but children, men and women who believe they may have been filmed or had unpleasant interactions with him – to contact law enforcement and begin the process of review,” said attorney Parker Stinar.

Two class action lawsuits were filed against Aejaz, DMC Sinai Grace and Henry Ford Macomb. The investigation revealed that a large number of patients were sexually abused and filmed against their will.

“Unfortunately, these women who have come forward, these survivors or former patients, have to sit around today and perhaps for the rest of their lives and worry about the videos or photos we take of them as we’re done with them,” Stinar said. “Were they sold? Were they distributed? Were they livestreamed elsewhere?”

The lawsuits, filed by Stinar Gould Grieco & Hensley, argue that medical institutions must protect their patients from such incidents, but instead believe that hospitals provide a platform for doctors to abuse and exploit them.

“The hospitals gave him privileges and allowed him to see these patients, and unfortunately they continued his abuse by filming and photographing patients,” Stinar said. “From what I understand from the Sheriff’s Department, we believe that during that six-year period, he may have seen patients that he was not even responsible for, hundreds, if not thousands.”

There could be more victims

The lawyers behind the lawsuit are now asking people to come forward if they believe they have been victims of attacks.

“We look forward to hearing from more survivors,” Stinar said. “We celebrate and respect their courage and will protect your confidentiality.”

The lawyers promise to maintain confidentiality to those who come forward.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office has set up an email address for people who believe they are victims. You can reach them here.

DMC Sinai Grace Response

Detroit Medical Center officials issued the following statement about Aejaz.

The DMC is committed to providing a safe environment for all patients who come to us. Dr. Oumair Aejaz is not authorized to admit or treat patients at DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital or any other DMC hospital and has not treated patients at DMC since completing his residency in 2015. Therefore, we are not aware of any basis for these allegations.
