Munich (dpa) – Who could be the new Thomas Müller? FC Bayern Munich can imagine future crucial support from artificial intelligence in answering such a question. However, according to IT director Michael Fichtner, the club is still at the beginning of using these technologies.

“AI can be used, for example, in scouting or in evaluating injury frequencies, which we were very busy with last season,” he was quoted as saying at the “Auto, Motor und Sport” congress on AI and digitization in the Allianz Arena in Munich. But AI could also help with pattern recognition and in answering the question “whether a young player could become the new Thomas Müller.”

The German record champions do not see themselves as competing with other Bundesliga clubs in the fight for attention and relevance. “We are not afraid that a current Bayern fan will become a fan of Bayer Leverkusen,” said Munich-based CIO (Chief Information Officer) Fichtner. “Our concern is that we will lose relevance and our fans will prefer to spend their time on American football or Taylor Swift.”
