Police arrest teacher for hacking government database – Society

The National Police arrested a 25-year-old unemployed teacher in Banyuwangi, East Java, earlier this month for illegally gaining access to the National Civil Service Agency (BKN) database and selling the data online.

Head of the Cybercrime Division, Brigadier General Himawan Bayu Ajat of the Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) of the National Police, told a press conference on Tuesday that the teacher, identified by his initials BAG, gained unauthorized access to BKN’s servers by obtaining the login credentials of a BKN official from BreachForums, a darknet platform that trades in stolen data.

The BAG then downloaded 6.3 gigabytes (GB) of data from the BKN servers, including sample data from officials in an unnamed province, and uploaded it to the text storage space Pastebin.com.

He allegedly advertised the data by uploading examples to BreachForums and his account on the messaging platform Telegram.

“[From the sale of BKN data]BAG made a profit of $8,000 [Rp 120 million]”, said Himawan, quoted by Kompas.com.

The director of the cybercrime department also stressed that BAG, who has a teaching degree, managed to break into government and private databases without having any formal training in information technology, but instead learned hacking through the Internet.
