Shooting range in Teller County temporarily closed after 40-acre fire extinguished

TELLER COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – A fire was extinguished Tuesday in Teller County, 6.92 miles northwest of Woodland Park, after it spread to 100 acres.

The fire was first reported by the US Forest Service at 1:41 p.m. on Tuesday.

The U.S. Forest Service said the Turkey Tracks 5 fire site was frequently used for target shooting and that large amounts of trash and ammunition were found in the area, further fueling the fire.

Several fire engines and crews from the U.S. Forest Service and the Northeast Teller County, Douglas County and Mountain Communities volunteer fire departments assisted in fighting the fire.

They said the area typically experiences five to 10 fires a year due to target shooting and that firefighters have created fire breaks to protect surrounding communities and help extinguish the fires.

Firefighters said they would likely keep the area closed for the next few days while they work to extinguish the fire.
