Firefighters battle ‘stubborn’ building fire in northeast DC

Firefighters spent hours Monday battling a fire in a building in northeast DC, according to DC Fire and Emergency Services officials.

At around 2:50 p.m., emergency crews responded to a two-story building that was emitting smoke in the 2500 block of Bladensburg Road, northeast.

When emergency crews arrived on scene, they found that the fire had already spread to the ground floor and basement of the building. Firefighters extinguished the fire on both floors, officials said.

As temperatures rose above 30 degrees on Monday, firefighters worked to open the building and extinguish hot spots. Officials said one person was examined by emergency services before refusing further treatment.

At around 4:03 p.m., additional firefighters were called to extinguish the “stubborn” fire in the basement, officials said.

According to authorities, all firefighters were evacuated at 4:22 p.m. because the flames had reached the ground floor of the building.

The emergency services continued to work from the outside with various hoses. According to authorities, by 5 p.m. there was no longer any smoke to be seen and the firefighters were examining the condition of the building.
