Red Sox could target 26-year-old All-Star pitcher on the transfer market

Red Sox could target 26-year-old All-Star pitcher on the transfer market

If the Boston Red Sox want to sign an elite pitcher this winter, they will have to part with a young, productive outfielder.

Triston Casas and Wilyer Abreu are the names that have been discussed recently as possible trade items that Boston could put on the market in exchange for a key starter.

Abreu’s departure would hurt, but maybe less if Roman Anthony is as good as advertised. If Casas leaves, Rafael Devers could perhaps move to first base to save his shoulders.

There are many possible outcomes and Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow will have many decisions to make between now and spring training.

If and when offers come in for Casas, Abreu or perhaps Ceddanne Rafaela, Breslow – himself a former major league pitcher – is expected to move prudently and bring in the most valuable starter in exchange for one of Boston’s rising stars.

The Seattle Mariners play a prominent role in this story, as Seattle has two young starting pitchers in Logan Gilbert and George Kirby, both of whom the Red Sox would like to sign.

Despite his All-Star appearance last season, Kirby is only 26 years old.

Kirby was selected 20th overall by Seattle in the 2019 MLB Draft, has played to his potential and could ultimately play a star role in Boston if Breslow can get a deal done.
