Man sparks debate: He sends his wife a video after cleaning the medicine cabinet

A Reddit user sparked a major debate online when he claimed he sent his wife a video from work to show that he had cleaned out her medicine cabinet – an action that he said did not go down well with him.

In a Reddit post, a 57-year-old man named EmploymentIll7597 wrote that one day while his 52-year-old wife was at work, he “decided to clean out the medicine cabinet.”

“I noticed that many of the medications were expired and there were a lot of repeats. For example, we had four bags of cough drops, three bottles of ibuprofen, etc.,” he wrote.

While disposing of the expired and excess medications, the man said he made a video “of the process” in which he pointed out expiration dates and “calmly explained why these medications would need to be monitored more closely in the future.” He then sent the three-minute video to his wife while she was at work.

However, he claimed that his wife of 30 years was very upset when she called him.

“She accused me of trying to embarrass her and said she couldn’t understand why I was so hateful,” he wrote.

“She told me that if I had been so concerned about our medicine cabinet that I should have checked it daily or weekly, and if I had been so concerned about cleaning out the medicine cabinet, I would have just done it without making a shaming video,” he wrote.

Although the Reddit user claimed he wasn’t “trying to shame her, but to inform her,” he wanted to know what others thought.

Their alleged argument sparked a debate in the comments section about whether the husband should have cleaned out the medicine cabinet without her and then sent her the video. There was a consensus that his actions were inappropriate.

“[The fact] “The fact that you felt you had to do this so urgently while your wife was at work, treating her almost like a child, ‘informing’ her rather than giving her any agency is a real AH move,” one person wrote. “Simply talking to her and coming up with a compromise would have been totally fine.”

“You obviously don’t buy the drugs because you would know better what’s in them. So why did you decide one day to empty them out and film yourself doing it?” read another comment.

“What was the point of the video? To be right? To ‘show and teach’? To rub the state of the medicine cabinet in her face?” said a third response.

Other commentators discussed the differences in the type and taste of medications and what can and cannot be mixed together. The shelf life of medications, which can vary depending on the product and doctor’s recommendation, was also the subject of much discussion.

Another Redditor pointed out that this is an example of why communication is so important in relationships.

“If the state of your medicine cabinet bothered you, you should have talked to your wife and cleaned it out together,” wrote one commenter. “You’ve been married long enough to know that communication is part of a healthy marriage.”
