Accessibility on the tennis court

Accessibility on the tennis court

Rochester, NY (WHAM) – Our bright spot is accessibility on the tennis court.

Rochester Accessible Adventures ensures that everyone has access to the game and hosts wheelchair tennis clinics throughout the summer.

“We are excited to be offering wheelchair tennis classes this summer,” said Anita O’Brien, executive director of Rochester Accessible Adventures. “We look forward to generating excitement and awareness that this sport is for everyone.”

The group recently received funding for the program from the US Tennis Association.

“Once someone has a basic understanding of how to use a sports wheelchair, they can play with anyone,” O’Brien said. “They can go to the local field and play with a family member, a neighbor or a friend.”

The program aims to provide players with new opportunities and change the public’s perception of tennis.

“This is a model of what such a program can look like,” said player Luticha André Doucette. “We want to show the world that you are just as capable as anyone else to enjoy the sport with your friends and family.”
