A former Orange County district attorney facing bribery charges died in a shooting at his home Tuesday morning as the FBI arrived to arrest him, sources familiar with the matter told NBC New York.

Stewart Rosenwasser, a former chief counsel in the Orange County district attorney’s office and an assistant district attorney, was accused of abusing his authority in the prosecutor’s office to pursue criminal proceedings at the request of a millionaire former restaurant owner, according to the unsealed indictment filed by federal authorities.

Rosenwasser was charged with bribery, conspiracy to commit bribery, extortion under the guise of official authority, making false statements, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud and honest services wire fraud, the indictment states.

The FBI went to Rosenwasser’s home in Campbell Hall, a town in Orange County, early Tuesday morning to arrest him. He pointed a gun at agents and the FBI fired at least one shot, two sources familiar with the case told NBC New York. Rosenwasser then barricaded himself in and apparently took his own life, the sources said.

In a statement, the FBI said its inspection division was “reviewing an agent-involved shooting” in accordance with bureau policy.

“As this is an ongoing matter, we cannot provide any further details,” the statement concluded.

According to the indictment, Rosenwasser was accused of accepting bribes totaling at least $63,000.

“It is truly heartbreaking that it ended this way. My deepest condolences go out to his family,” Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said in a statement. The district attorney’s office said it would have no further comment.
