Detroit Fire Department responded to the new Wayne County Criminal Justice Center Tuesday morning after people reported smelling natural gas.

According to the county, the odor came from a nearby DTE construction site and fire officials deemed the building safe.

According to the district, some employees left the building voluntarily, but no evacuation was ordered.

In a statement, DTE said: “At DTE Energy, the safety of our customers and communities is our highest priority. There are currently no confirmed natural gas leaks near the Criminal Justice Center in Detroit, but our teams are assisting in locating the source of a reported odor in the area.”

The new CJC includes the Third Circuit Court, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office and the Wayne County Clerk’s Office.

Wayne County’s new jail struggles with fights, flooding and suicide attempts

Earlier this month, 7Investigator Ross Jones reported on several problems at the new Wayne County Jail in the weeks since it opened, including flooding, fights and an inmate’s suicide attempt.

The turbulent launch has left MPs and lawyers frustrated, saying the state-of-the-art facility has not proved to be the panacea some officials had promised.

“We were told that all the things and problems we had in the previous jails would not be a problem in the new facility,” said Allen Cox, president of the Wayne County Deputy Sheriff’s Association. “That was not the case.”

In response to questions about the issues surrounding the opening of the jail, sheriff’s office spokesman Ed Foxworth referred 7 News Detroit to an earlier statement from the county that said, in part:

We know that, much like a new home, there are some issues that need to be resolved and our team, working with the other stakeholders, is up to the task. Over the next six months to a year, we look forward to sharing the stories of how citizens are experiencing an even better service than before.
