Five wagons of a freight train derail at New Maynaguri station in Bengal, train traffic is diverted to another route

An empty freight train derailed at New Mayanaguri railway station in Alipurdua district of West Bengal on Tuesday morning. Following the accident, train traffic on this route was diverted to an alternative route. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the train derailment, ANI reported.

Currently, rehabilitation work is underway at the station to resume train services on the route. To minimize the impact on train operations, the Northeast Frontier Railway zone is closely monitoring the situation.

There were no injuries in the accident, which occurred at 6 am on Tuesday. Soon after the accident, senior officials, including the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Alipurduar, arrived at the accident site to take stock of the situation.

The station has five operating lines, so train traffic will resume in full shortly after the repair work is completed during the day.

Station master Mukesh Kumar told ANI, “As far as we know, a goods train derailed at 6.20 am today. There were no injuries. Reconstruction work is underway.”

Amarjit Gautam, DRM of Alipurduar Division, said that the department is trying to fully restore traffic as soon as possible and that the investigation is underway.

“This morning, around five coaches of an empty goods train derailed near New Maynaguri railway station. We are trying to restore traffic. The cause of this (accident) is yet to be ascertained. The team is probing it… We are investigating it,” Amarjit Gautam, DRM of Alipurduar Division, told ANI on Monday.

When asked about the exact reason for the train derailment and the possibility of an attempt to tamper with the railway line, Amarjit Gautam said the exact cause of the accident had not yet been determined even after an investigation.

The latest incident comes against the backdrop of several attempted train derailments. A few days ago, a major train accident was averted after railway authorities discovered an empty gas cylinder on the tracks. The gas cylinder was spotted by a train driver, who applied emergency brakes and stopped the train near Prempur railway station in Uttar Pradesh, PTI reported.
