After battling wind gusts of up to 80 km/h for four nights, firefighters announced Monday morning that they had completely contained the 34-hectare Refugio fire on the Gaviota coast.

The vegetation fire broke out late Thursday night off the 1400 block of Refugio Road and prompted evacuation warnings to be issued for portions of Refugio Canyon, which were lifted Friday night after firefighters stopped the fire from spreading further.

Firefighting efforts were “aided by the lowest August temperatures recorded in 34 years,” the Los Padres National Forest wrote on X. Its firefighters, along with those from the Chumash Fire Department and Vandenberg Space Force Base, remain on site to search for remaining heat pockets and continue cleanup efforts.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
