Big cheers for Marin Cilic

Marin Cilic crowned his comeback at the 250 event in Hangzhou on Tuesday with tournament victory. The Croatian, who had not played in a tournament at the highest ATP level for seven months before the tournament in the Chinese metropolis, won the final against local hero Zhizhen Zhang with 7:6 (5) and 7:6 (5).

With his tournament victory in Hangzhou, Cilic also made history: the 35-year-old had started the tournament as world number 777 and, with his victory over Zhang, became the lowest-ranked title holder in the history of men’s tennis.

After his tournament victory, Cilic, who will now continue in Tokyo, is already back in the top 200 of the world rankings. The 2014 US Open winner also prevented a Chinese player from winning a second tournament by just a few minutes: Juncheng Shang had won the title shortly before at the event taking place in parallel in Chengdu.
