Hattersheim/Frankfurt am Main – A former youth coach is alleged to have raped several boys, and some of the cases must now be retried. However, the trial begins largely behind closed doors.

In the trial against a former football coach for sexual abuse before the Frankfurt Regional Court, the public was excluded from the reading of the specific charges and the defendant’s statement.

Otherwise, the interests of the 37-year-old and the victims, who were minors at the time of the crime, could be violated, said the presiding judge. Incidentally, the story would be told from their private sphere.

In the trial, the man must again face charges of rape and physical assault of children and adolescents as well as the production of youth and child pornography.

At the beginning of the year, the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) partially overturned an earlier ruling against him due to a procedural error, so that 6 of the 69 individual cases now have to be retried.

Between 2014 and 2021, the man sexually abused several underage boys in Hattersheim; in some cases, he is said to have secretly drugged them beforehand with sleeping pills in drinks or chocolate.

During this period, the man worked for two years as a youth coach for third division football club SV Wehen Wiesbaden.

However, according to earlier information from the Frankfurt public prosecutor’s office, children and young people from this Hessian club were not among the victims.

The man was arrested in December 2021.

Last year, the Frankfurt District Court sentenced the man to a prison sentence of twelve years and nine months for serious rape, sexual abuse of children and young people, and other sexual and physical assault offenses. In addition, subsequent preventive detention was ordered.

The accused appealed against this verdict because the trial was not made public after a victim had been questioned on one of the hearing days. The Federal Court of Justice therefore overturned the conviction in several cases.

According to current planning, the regional court will hear the case until the end of November.
