Lions begin roster cuts and release WR who showed outstanding performance against Chiefs

The Detroit Lions have begun the difficult process of trimming down their roster ahead of Tuesday’s cuts deadline, and the first to go is wide receiver Kaden Davis. NFL reporter Jordan Schultz broke the news, revealing that Davis, who had been fighting for a spot on the team, is being released.

Davis, 25, joined the Lions in May, just two weeks after being released by the Arizona Cardinals. Despite having little time to prove himself, Davis made his presence known in the preseason.

In three preseason games, Davis recorded five catches for 96 yards and a touchdown. His standout moment came in the Lions’ win over the Kansas City Chiefs, where he caught two passes for 64 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nate Sudfeld. That catch was the Lions’ first touchdown of the game and set the tone for their 24-23 victory.

During Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Davis continued to flash his potential, making two catches for 27 yards in the 24-17 win at Ford Field.

However, with a large group of wide receivers vying for the few spots, Davis faced stiff competition. MLive’s Kyle Meinke and Benjamin Raven both predicted in their 53-man roster projections that Davis, along with others like Donovan Peoples-Jones and Daurice Fountain, would struggle to make the final selection.

In addition to the Cardinals and Lions, Davis also played for the Denver Broncos and Michigan Panthers of the UFL.

All NFL teams must complete their 53-man rosters by 4 p.m. Tuesday.
