JMU stuns Tar Heels

The James Madison Dukes have astonished the college football world in Chapel Hill. JMU has defeated an ACC team away from home for the second time in a row. North Carolina was defeated 70-50 and head coach Bob Chesney was satisfied: “We played harder and more disciplined and we played together, believed in ourselves and never lost faith in ourselves.” Such nice sentences may not always reflect the true essence of the story, but it can be confirmed that JMU quarterback Alonza Barnett III could not be stopped. His seven touchdowns are now a new school record. The redshirted sophomore threw five touchdown passes for 388 yards and ran for two more himself.

The statistics department in Chapel Hill was particularly busy during the first two quarters. JMU scored 53 points during this period and went into the break 32 points behind their opponents. On defense, the Dukes forced five turnovers, including two interceptions and three fumbles. Eight tackles for loss and three sacks round out the picture of a bravely fighting underdog from the Sun Belt Conference. For this success, James Madison University was awarded the title of “Cheez-it National Team of the Week” by the Football Writers of America Association.
