Tom Selleck tells Ted Danson that he “still can’t describe exactly” his time on Magnum PI

Tom Selleck had his very first podcast appearance!

In an episode of Where Everyone Knows Your Name with Ted Danson and Woody HarrelsonTom sat down to promote his new book, You never knowand talk about his eventful career – from his time as a filmmaker Three men and a baby captivated television audiences as New York Police Commissioner Frank Reagan Blue Blood.

But as his friend Ted Danson asked about Magnum PIthe series that really launched Tom’s career, the actor opened up quite vulnerable about his time on the show.

“I didn’t like it,” Tom admitted. “Mostly because of my family and the feeling of privacy. And I had to ask questions in interviews that I didn’t want to say or answer. I tried and said, ‘You better find a way and a line of what you want to talk about.’ I didn’t always succeed, but it just evolved. I still can’t describe it exactly, but I didn’t have to go through that every day.”

“It” is the stress that comes with trying to stay under the radar and maintain some sense of normalcy as a 6’4” megastar.

“I had a beautiful house in Hawaii,” Tom continued in the interview. “It was a tiny little house – a one-bedroom house. I rented it. Later I bought it. It was the first house I could afford. I belonged to a club called the Outrigger Canoe Club, and they were locals. They knew I was an actor, but that time – while the actors were on strike and we couldn’t start the show, start filming – was great. I was actually living Magnum’s life. On the beach and stuff. So it was really, I don’t know, a lot to get used to, I think. I don’t know how people… Let’s say the same show was in LA and it was the same heat. I don’t know how people do it. I had this huge buffer and it was a blessing.”

Over 40 years since Magnum PI Premiere, and it’s safe to say that Tom has become a little more accustomed to the spotlight – especially after over a decade of continuous fanfare surrounding Blue Blood. However, the end of an era is in sight. New episodes of Blue Blood Season 14 – the final season of the franchise – will premiere on October 18, 2024.
