Search for suspect after student shot on University of Arizona campus

TUCSON, Arizona (13 News) – University of Arizona police are investigating a fatal shooting after a student was killed on the University of Arizona campus late Sunday night.

The UAPD says it was notified by the Tucson Police Department at 10:59 p.m. of a shooting near the Arizona Sonora Hall near Park Avenue and Fourth Street.

When officers arrived at the scene, they were directed to a parking lot south of the dorm.

UAPD found a college-aged man on the ground next to a car.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was shot by the suspect on the volleyball court following an altercation between several people.

According to the UAPD, witnesses carried the victim to a car that was supposed to take him to the hospital, but then waited in the parking lot for emergency responders.

UAPD officers and paramedics attempted to save the victim’s life. The victim died at the scene.

According to the UAPD, the victim was a student at Pima Community College.

Authorities believe that no one else was injured in the shooting and that it was an isolated incident.

UAPD said classes will continue as scheduled today and that psychological support is available for those who need it.

The UAPD said authorities are searching for the suspect, who left the volleyball courts on foot heading north.

The UAPD provided the following description of the suspect:

  • Male, 1.80 m tall
  • 19-25 years
  • Dark skin color and described by witnesses as being of Middle Eastern or Hispanic descent
  • Collar-length, dark curly hair with facial hair
  • He was last seen wearing a white short sleeve shirt and tan shorts.

Witnesses described the weapon used as a small black pistol.

Police said the investigation was still ongoing.

The UAPD will conduct additional patrols.
