Total of $100K reward for info. in mass shooting that killed 4, injured 17

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The Birmingham Police Department says four people are dead after a mass shooting in Five Points South Saturday night, Sept. 21.

In a news conference Monday morning, officials announced Crime Stoppers is offering $50,000 for information leading to solving this crime.

The FBI is also offering up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for the shooting.

Officials want to remind the public that you can remain anonymous. If you have information about those involved, you can call the FBI at 1-800-225-5324, BPD at 205-254-1764, or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.

“It is critically important that as a community we come together in this moment … We can’t give them cover, they should not feel safe in our community, they should not feel safe anywhere. It’s your time to step up and we need you,” said Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin.

“We are still sifting through Crime Stoppers tips, we have received a significant number of those. We encourage the public to continue to share that information with Birmingham Police Department. Our federal partners have been a tremendous help so far in working through a lot of the information and evidence that we have recovered. There are still five that are currently in the hospital as of today [Monday.] Our detectives have been out, really since this occurred, working through the night and just talking to different people, gathering information. The FBI has offered some additional resources that will be in place later today that will help us connect the dots on some of that information, if you will. We are still receiving some surveillance video and other things as well,” said Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond.

Just after 11 p.m. on Saturday, Birmingham Police received a call of a shooting in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue.

Officials arrived on scene and saw two men and one woman lying unresponsive on the sidewalk. Police say those three victims died at the scene. Officer Truman Fitzgerald says a fourth victim was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital Saturday night.

Birmingham Police have identified all of the victims:

  • 21-year-old Anitra Holloman of Bessemer
  • 27-year-old Tahj Booker of Birmingham
  • 27-year-old Carlos McCain of Birmingham
  • 26-year-old Roderick Lynn Patterson, Jr., of Birmingham

As of Monday morning, the Birmingham Police Department says four of the surviving victims have life-threatening injuries.

A spokesperson with UAB Hospital says they received a total of 12 victims, including one of the deceased victims from the scene. At this time, UAB Hospital says they are currently treating four victims with conditions ranging from good to critical.

Other victims were taken to various hospitals across the city.

Police say there are a total of 21 gunshot victims, including the four who were killed. The other 17 victims have injuries ranging from critical to non-life-threatening.

Police believe multiple suspects arrived at the location in a vehicle. The suspects exited the vehicle and fired multiple shots at a group of people who were on the sidewalk of Magnolia Avenue before getting back in their vehicle and fleeing the scene.

Detectives believe the shooting was not random and stemmed from an isolated incident where multiple victims were caught in the crossfire.

In a news conference Sunday morning, Thurmond said police believe someone was paid to kill the targeted victim, and they believe that victim is among those who died.

Police confirmed the weapons used were fully automatic. More than 100 shell casings were found at the scene, according to Thurmond.

“This is not the first occasion, unfortunately, in 2024 where we’ve seen the style of weapons, the number of bullets on the scene, possibly convergent use, etcetera, for automatic weapons being used in our streets,” said Woodfin.

They are also working to determine who the target of the shooting was. Authorities will be reviewing video surveillance.

“I will say this, we, all of us as a community, owe it to the victims to do everything we can to take these shooters killers off our streets,” Mayor Woodfin said.

At this time, authorities say nobody is in custody.

The following is a statement from the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention Director Stef Feldman:

“Last night, several people were killed and many more wounded in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. And once again, our entire nation is watching in horror as another community is devastated by the national epidemic of gun violence. President Biden and Vice President Harris join Americans across the nation in praying for the families affected by this senseless violence. At the direction of the President, the White House is coordinating with Federal, state, and local officials as investigations are underway.

Americans should not have to live like this. And we can’t let it become normal. This year alone there have been more than 400 mass shootings which have traumatized Americans and torn communities apart. As President Biden often says: Enough is enough.

One year ago today, President Biden took the historic step of establishing the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, overseen by Vice President Harris, to reduce gun violence ravaging communities across the country. The office builds on historic action taken by the President and Vice President to save lives, including signing into law the most significant legislation to combat gun violence in 30 years. President Biden and Vice President Harris have also made historic investments in community violence interventions and taken action to stop the illegal flow of guns into our communities. But we know it is not enough. That’s why President Biden and Vice President Harris will continue to call on Congress to act, including by banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines and requiring background checks for all gun sales. Americans deserve nothing less.”
