At the start of today’s hearing, a lawyer for one of the parties urged a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala to delay the case, scheduled for hearing on September 27, until next week on grounds of urgency.

“We will put it on the agenda for the hearing next Tuesday, October 1,” the CJI said.

The top court on September 17 expressed concern over the findings in a status report by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the rape and murder case, but refused to disclose details.

It was said that any disclosure could jeopardize the ongoing investigation.

The company had also asked the CBI for a status report on its investigation into financial irregularities allegedly committed by jailed former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh.

It was also said that the CBI had not “slept through” the investigation and must be given time to “bring the truth to light”.

“What the CBI has revealed in the report is really disturbing. What you are pointing out is extremely disturbing. We ourselves are concerned, the CBI has flagged it for us. We ourselves are disturbed by what we have read,” the top court had told a lawyer who alleged discrepancies in the seizure list and the sketch of the crime scene.

She urged the protesting junior doctors in West Bengal to resume their work and received assurances from the state government that it would not take any adverse action or punitive measures against them.

The Supreme Court had taken note of a letter from the deceased’s father and ordered that the “valuable” information submitted by him should be given due consideration by the investigating officer.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the CBI, had assured the court that the investigating agency would remain in touch with the parents of the deceased junior doctor and keep them updated about the ongoing investigation to allay their legitimate concerns.

The body of the paramedic with severe injuries was found on August 9. The following day, a volunteer was arrested by the Calcutta police in connection with the case.

On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation from the Calcutta Police to the CBI, which began its investigation on August 14.
