Tennis – Is the Laver Cup coming for women? – Sport

Berlin (dpa) – Laver Cup boss Tony Godsick does not rule out holding the team competition for women in the distant future. “But it will take some time to come up with the right format for a tournament with women. First of all, we want to reach our full potential with the Laver Cup for men. Then we will look at various options,” said Godsick, who is married to three-time Grand Slam finalist Mary Joe Fernandez.

The Laver Cup has been held for men since 2017. Godsick had the idea with tennis legend Roger Federer, who has been the Swiss’s manager for many years. The aim is to continuously build up the Laver Cup, in which a European team meets the world selection. “I think we should name and design it differently, but the format works.” Hopefully we can come up with something in the future,” said Godsick about a possible women’s competition.

In the future in Asia and South America?

The Laver Cup took place in Berlin for the seventh time. “Our goal is to be like the Ryder Cup in golf, and the Ryder Cup is 90 years ahead of us,” said Godsick. First, the existing men’s competition will be made even more popular. Next year it will go to San Francisco, then back to Europe. “After that, I think we need to go to Asia and South America,” said Federer.
