GP Singapore – Norris takes start-finish victory in Singapore despite moment of shock – Sport

The British McLaren driver starts from pole position at the Night GP and takes his 3rd triumph of the season.

The podium

  • 1. Lando Norris (GBR/McLaren) 1:40:52.571 hours
  • 2. Max Verstappen (NED/Red Bull) +20.945 seconds
  • 3. Oscar Piastri (AUS/McLaren) + 41.823 seconds

After the Miami GP and the Dutch GP, Lando Norris has won a Formula 1 race for the third time this season and the third time in his career. The Briton won comfortably in a surprisingly uneventful night GP in Singapore.

Starting from pole position, Norris got off to a good start and defended first place in the first corner. The 24-year-old from Bristol then pulled away from his pursuers second by second. Behind him, Max Verstappen in the Red Bull came in second. This reduced the Dutchman’s lead over Norris in the World Championship from 59 to 52 points.

In 3rd place, however, there was a change compared to last Saturday’s qualifying: Oscar Piastri, the winner of the race in Azerbaijan, showed a strong GP in the McLaren, gained two positions compared to Saturday and thus grabbed the last place on the podium. It’s going in the other direction for Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time world champion and third in qualifying had to settle for 6th place in the Mercedes.

Norris quickly puts his car into the tire stack

In the 32nd lap, Norris’s start-to-finish victory was briefly in danger. Alone in the lead, the leader braked too hard before a right-hand bend and headed for the tire stack. Norris was just able to turn the wheel and avoided touching the tires by a few centimeters. In the 48th lap, Norris again lost concentration – this also had no consequences for him.

A first: no safety car in Singapore

The narrow street circuit in Singapore has been predestined for accidents and incidents in the past. Never since the GP was added to the F1 calendar in 2008 has a race taken place without a safety car phase. The safety car had to be deployed on lap 36 at the latest. Not so in 2024: All 62 laps were completed without incident. The only retirements involved Alexander Albon in the Williams on lap 16 (technical) and Kevin Magnussen in the Haas on lap 58 (technical).

Clean far back

After the last two places in qualifying on Saturday, no miracles could be expected from the two Sauber drivers in the race. Both Valtteri Bottas (19th in qualifying) and Guanyu Zhou (20th) did their laps at the back of the field, but were able to make up a few positions. In the end, Zhou finished 15th and Bottas 16th.

This is how it continues

The next Grand Prix will not take place for less than a month. The F1 circus will be in Austin from October 18th to 20th. In the US state of Texas, a sprint race is scheduled for Saturday, and the GP will take place on Sunday.
