“It has to come from him” – Völler talks about DFB future of shooting star Wanner

Paul Wanner has not yet made a decision about whether he wants to play for Austria or the German national team in the future. The youngster from FC Bayern, who is currently blossoming during his loan to 1. FC Heidenheim, can choose between these two options.

“It is extremely important that we keep a player like that,” said Rudi Völler in the “Aktuelles Sportstudio” at ZDF very openly and clearly on this topic. “Of course he knows what he has in Germany. He is currently playing in the U20 or U21.” However, he is only set to play for a nation once he has played in a competitive match for the senior national team of a country. That has not been the case so far.

When does it have to be “deep in your heart that you want to play for the nation,” Völler continued. This feeling had to be the final factor in his decision. The DFB team’s sports director therefore described it as “certainly wrong” to try to persuade a player to do so: “It has to come from him.” […] Family also plays an important role.

In addition, you shouldn’t make promises that you may not be able to keep in the end. Völler may have been referring to the prospect of playing time or similar aspects. Based on these statements, however, it can be assumed that he has already sought a conversation with Julian Nagelsmann with a view to inviting the 18-year-old to the selection team at a later date. Hannes Wolf, as head coach of the U20s and director of youth, training and development, is still responsible for direct contact with Wanner.
