The waste collectors from Wolletzsee: Every year on World Cleanup Day, families from the bungalow and camping club at Wolletzsee in Angermünde meet for a big clean-up campaign. They collect illegally disposed waste. That adds up to a lot.

At the end of the season, this is unfortunately also visible in the middle of nature. There is rubbish and garbage in the bushes, in the forest, and on the meadow. Every year, dozens of volunteers track it down during the big clean-up campaign.

For World Cleanup Day on the 3rd weekend of September 2024, more than 35 helpers once again stalked through the forests and meadows at Wolletzsee to search for illegal garbage dumps and to rid nature of human waste.

“We have been taking part in this campaign for a clean environment for four years now, but unfortunately we are still the only ones in Angermünde to do so,” says Konrad Hippius from the bungalow association at Wolletzsee. Together with the neighboring camping association at the campsite, they want to actively do something for more environmental protection and cleanliness in Angermünde and protect their natural refuge at Wolletzsee.

Campers and bungalow settlers are streaming out with their families. Even tourists are travelling from further afield for the clean-up. The volunteers come from Berlin, Strausberg, Leipzig, Jena, Stuttgart and also Angermünde. They loved the Wolletzsee and want to preserve the idyllic natural environment.

Bungalow association and campers protect their natural idyll

“The campaign is not only good for the environment, it also brings the community together,” emphasises Antje Weiß from the camping club. The two clubs based on Wolletzsee already do a lot together and support each other, from children’s festivals to lantern rides on the lake to supplying drinking water from the campsite for the bungalow residents and the joint rubbish collection campaign.

This year there is more dirt than last year, says Konrad Hippius, pointing to the mountain of garbage bags piling up on the club grounds.

Garbage accumulated especially around the car park, at the bus stop and in the forest behind the lido. In the forest by the road there was a large illegal rubbish dump with construction tarpaulins. “There’s nothing we can’t find,” says Kurt Habermann.

Handcuffs, baby diapers and car batteries

The volunteers collected everything from cigarette butts to rubble, full baby diapers, condoms, liquor bottles, 50-liter canisters of salad mayonnaise and car batteries. “You don’t lose something like that by accident, it was recklessly disposed of in the environment,” said Marion Hippius indignantly. Handcuffs were the most curious find, and the wild “natural toilets” of campers on the Schäferberg were the most disgusting.

The regional waste disposal company, the Uckermärkische Dienstleistungsgesellschaft UDG, supports the environmentalists in the removal of garbage bags and especially hazardous waste such as car batteries.

World Cleanup Day needs more activists in Angermünde

After the cleanup, all the helpers meet on the club grounds of the bungalow community by the lake for a barbecue. “It’s a nice end to the season for all of us, where we come together as a big family. It brings people together,” says Konrad Hippius happily. And he hopes that their campaign in Angermünde will be copied and that World Cleanup Day will find even more supporters in the city who will tackle the dirty corners of the environment. Perhaps there will be more campaigns in 2025. There is plenty to do.
