WTA Tour: Tennis player Siegemund loses final in Thailand

Tennis player Laura Siegemund missed the third singles title of her career. The 36-year-old competed in the final of the WTA tournament in Hua Hin Thailand to Slovakian Rebecca Sramkova after almost two hours with 4:6, 4:6. “I am obviously disappointed at the moment,” said Siegemund, “but I can be very proud of myself.” I played very long and very good matches this week.”

Even reaching the final of the event with prize money of 267,000 dollars was a success for Siegemund. “I’m surprised, I never expected that I could make it to the final,” said the 99th in the world rankings, Arianne Hartono, after winning the semi-final against the Dutchwoman.

On her way to the final, Siegemund beat the Chinese player Wang Xiyu in the round of 16 after 4 hours and 9 minutes. It was the longest match on the women’s professional tour in 13 years.

Siegemund, who is very successful in doubles, won the singles tournament in Bastad in 2016 and the always strong tournament in Stuttgart in 2017. Siegemund has also reached two other singles finals, most recently last year in Warsaw.
