Hanfmann shines in China: semi-final in Chengdu

Tennis professional Yannick Hanfmann (32) has taken the Davis Cup momentum with him on the ATP tour and reached the semifinals for the second time this year after the clay court tournament in Kitzbühel in July. In Chengdu, China, the world number 95 also won his third match and can continue to dream of the title after the 7:6 (7:1), 6:2 win against fourth-seeded Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero.

On Monday, Hanfmann will play against Alexander Bublik (Kazakhstan/No. 2) or Juncheng Shang (China) for his third ATP final after Gstaad (2017) and Kitzbühel (2018). Hanfmann has not yet won a tournament. In the week before Chengdu, he qualified for the finals with the German Davis Cup team in Zhuhai, China, winning both of his singles matches.

The successes in the gigantic city of Chengdu, which has a population of one million, are already paying off: Hanfmann will receive 61,115 dollars and 100 world ranking points for the semifinals, which will help the Karlsruhe native climb the ATP rankings. A tournament win could even bring a place in the top 65; Hanfmann’s best ranking to date was 45th place in July 2023.
